Waldenström macroglobulinemia is a rare, slowgrowing non-Hodgkin lymphoma. WM is also called lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma. It starts in white blood cells called B Lymphocytes or B cells.

B cells are an important of the body’s immune system that form in the lymph nodes, spleen and other lymphiod tissues, including bone marrow. Some B cells transform into plasma cells that create, store and release antibodies that protect the body. Lymphoplasmacytic cells are cells that are in the process of maturing from cells to plasma cells. In WM, abnormal lymphoplasmacytic cells multiply out of control, producing large amounts of a protein called monoclonal immunoglobulin M (IgM or “macroglobulin”) antibody. High levels of IgM in the blood cause hyperviscosity (thickness or gumminess), which leads to many of the symptoms of WM.

Waldenström Macroglobulinemia Symptoms

Some patients do not have symptoms. For those who do have symptoms, the most common ones are weakness, severe fatigue, bleeding from the nose or gums, weight loss, and bruises or other skin lesions. Severely high levels of IgM can lead to hyperviscosity syndrome, in which the blood becomes abnormally thick. Symptoms of this syndrome include visual problems (e.g., blurring or loss of vision) and neurological problems (e.g., headache, dizziness, vertigo). During a physical exam, a doctor may also find swelling of the lymph nodes, spleen and or liver.

Waldenström Macroglobulinemia Diagnosis

Initial diagnosis of WM is based on blood test and bone marrow biopsy results. Blood tests are used to determine the level IgM in the blood and the presence of proteins, or tumor markers, that can indicate WM. For the biopsy, a sample of bone marrow (soft, sponge-like tissue in the center of most bones) is removed, usually from the back of the pelvis bone, through a needle for examination under a microscope. The pathologist (a doctor who identifies diseases by studying cells and tissue under a microscope) looks for certain types of lymphocytes (white blood cells) that indicate WM.1 Flow cytometry (a method of measuring cell properties using a light-sensitive dye and laser or other type of light) is often used to look at markers on the cell surface or inside the lymphocytes.

Fanconi anemia, or FA, is a rare, inherited blood disorder that leads to bone marrow failure. FA causes your bone marrow to stop making
enough new blood cells for your body to work normally. FA also can cause your bone marrow to make many abnormal blood cells. This can lead to serious health problems such as cancer.

FA is a blood disorder, but it also can affect many of your body’s organs, tissues, and systems. Children who inherit FA are at higher
risk of being born with birth defects. People with FA are at higher risk for some cancers and other serious health problems. FA is different from Fanconi syndrome. Fanconi syndrome affects a person’s kidneys. It’s a rare and serious condition found mostly in children. Children with Fanconi syndrome pass high amounts of key nutrients and chemicals through their urine, which leads to serious
health and developmental problems.

Causes

Fanconi anemia (FA) is an inherited disease. “Inherited” means that the disease is passed from parents to children through abnormal genes. At least eleven genes can cause FA if they’re not normal. FA develops when both parents pass the same abnormal gene for FA to their child.

People who have only one abnormal FA gene are “carriers” of FA. Carriers don’t have FA, but they can pass the abnormal gene to their children. If both of your parents have an abnormal FA gene, you have:

25% chance of having FA

25% chance of not having GA

50% chance of being a carrier of FA and passing it on to one of your children

If only one of your parents has a defective FA gene, you won’t develop the disorder. However, there is a 50 percent chance that you will be a carrier and pass the gene to any children you have.

Fanconi Anemia Symptoms

Anemia

Bone Marrow Failure

Birth defects

Developmental or eating problems

Fanconi Anemia is diagnosed in a number of way, here are some tests that can be done to diagnose Fanconi Anemia:

Chromosome breakage test

Cytometric flow analysis

Mutation screening

Thoracic outlet syndrome, or TOS, is a painful vascular and neurological disorder that occurs when nerves or blood vessels in the thoracic outlet become compressed. This problem can be the result of repetitive stress, such as work- or athlete-related motions, or inflammation that occurs due to an injury.

The thoracic outlet is an area of space between your collarbone and first rib. Nerves and blood vessels run from your head and neck, under the collarbone, through the armpit, and down your arm to your fingers. Thus, if anything happens to this bundle of nerves or blood vessels, it can cause serious damage to a large area of your body. If the thoracic outlet becomes inflamed through repetitive stress or injury, it can compress these tissues.

First, if just the nerves are affected by swelling in this area, you can develop neurogenic (neurological) TOS. This can cause your arm and hand to ache as well as tingling or numbness in your fingers. Overall, this can cause you to lose the strength of your grip. Additionally, you may have pain in your neck and shoulders.

Next, when your blood vessels are compressed, you may have vascular TOS. Because the swelling reduces or even cuts off the blood supply to your arm, your hand and arm may become bluish or lose color completely. Additionally, you may notice black spots on your fingers. Your arm may feel heavy, painful, and swollen as blood is trapped in the limb. Lastly, you may experience a throbbing lump near the collarbone where fresh blood gets dammed up.

Lastly, some people develop a nonspecific thoracic outlet syndrome. Although some doctors discredit this form, others believe it is a common problem. Nonspecific TOS causes pain in the thoracic outlet area, but doctors are unable to pinpoint the exact vascular or neurogenic cause.

If you now suffer from TOS due to a work-related repetitive motion injury, you may be entitled to workers’ compensation to aid in your treatment and recovery. To discuss your case, contact an experienced Raleigh workers’ comp attorney from Scudder & Hedrick, PLLC, today.

Hemorrhoids are a common condition. Also called piles, this is when the veins in the rectal area swell and become uncomfortable, painful, and can sometimes bleed. An estimated 10 million people in the US alone are said to be affected by it. If you are one of them, then you must be one of those eagerly looking for the best treatment there is.

There are various ways to cure hemorrhoids. They are dealt with by using medications as well as non-conventional methods. However, before delving further on these cures, perhaps the best way to face piles is by preventing them from happening. Or, if you already have them, practice some free and easy habits that will naturally alleviate their symptoms.

Diet

Your diet can be a simple form of pile treatment. You should stay away from processed foods and increase your intake of fresh ones instead. Eat a lot of cereals, fruits, and vegetables. Eat everything that is rich in fiber. Fiber will not only help you detoxify but also help you move bowel easily. When you have a regular bowel movement, you prevent constipation which can cause the rectal veins to swell.

Aside from eating a lot of fresh foods and fiber, you must increase your water intake too. It will have the same effect on your bowel movement.

Exercise

It may not sound related, but exercising regularly can actually prevent constipation. It helps reduce the pressure on your veins. In addition, it lessens your time just sitting down and slacking off. If you didn’t know yet, sitting down for a long time may cause piles. The position puts a lot of pressure on your anus because your weight concentration is there. If you take time to exercise, you can prevent this from happening.

Now, if you have a job which requires you to always sit down, you should do some stretching even just for five minutes every hour. Stand up or walk around. By doing so, you can decrease your risk of developing piles.

Toilet Habits

Go when you have to. Don’t make it wait. Making it wait until you have done everything you needed might eventually lead to constipation. When you constipate, you would have to push harder. When you push harder, your veins might swell. To make sure that you won’t have to go through all the hassle, go when you have to.

Now, when in the process of bowel movement, you should practice some caution in pushing too. Learn how to prevent yourself from putting too much strain on your anus as it may lead to piles. Ideally, you should be done with your business in less than five minutes. Any time longer than that is too much. You should also ensure to wipe just adequately-not too hard nor too long. This may sound simple, but it makes a great preventive treatment for hemorrhoids.

Planning your diet, exercising, and being more conscious about your toilet habits can all be a form of treatment for piles. They are easy, effective, and what’s more, free!

Vioxx was one of the most prescribed drugs for arthritis pain, before it was taken off the market by its manufacturer Merck. It was taken off the market in September 2004 when research trials proved that it increased the chances of a heart attack in the patient.

Even though the drug has been pulled off the market about a year ago, legal action against the manufacturer Merck will continue and increase for sometime now. Vioxx lawsuit has become a more house hold term after a judge awarded $253.4 million to the Carol Ernst, widow of Bob Ernst due to his death in May 2001 from the drug. The award was among the highest ever awarded to an individual plaintiff, Merck has said it will appeal. He used Vioxx most often. This has prompted more and more Personal injury attorneys representing clients allegedly harmed by the drug to congratulate themselves over this historic judgment. This Vioxx lawsuit defeat caused Merck stock to fall 8 percent in an afternoon and it has yet to recover.

During the 1998 clinical trials for Vioxx, Merck the manufacturer reported to FDA that there were no apparent cardiovascular signals. This in normal terms means that there were no hints that the drug might cause and heart problems for the users. Later, during internal trials conducted by Merck around the same period revealed serious cardiovascular complications in Vioxx users compared to patients not using the drug. This was also labeled as Study – 090. The study was not published since Merck; the manufacturer claimed that the sample size was not large enough to provide definitive data.

In 1999, FDA gave formal approval to the drug, Vioxx. The drug became the second nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication [or COX-2 inhibitor] in the market after its predecessor Celebrex. Celebrex was another problem drug.

Vioxx was expected to make up the shortfall of reducing sales from Merck’s other drugs facing competition, but sales were slowed down by concerns among doctors that its use could form blood clots that may cause heart attacks. Merck has tried to calm doctor’s fears with new precaution information that includes mention of the heart risks, and assuring them of an ongoing study to collect more information on cardiovascular outcomes of using Vioxx. Merck then promoted the new Vioxx aggressively into international market and by 2003 it was available in 80 countries with sales above $2.5 billion. Apparently, Merck’s ongoing internal tests revealed deadly side effects.

During this process, FDA, sometime in 2001, recommended that warning labels be put upon prescriptions displaying potential side effects. FDA also warned Merck to stop providing misleading information to physicians about potential side effects.

Problems started surfacing soon and they served as warnings to FDA and the industry critics and to Personal Injury attorneys who soon began to gather evidence. This evidence gathering resulted in Merck’s negligence to surface. This was the beginning of massive advertising campaigns in all forms of media and the internet apparently meant to inform and attract patients harmed by the drug – the message asking patients suspecting harm from using Vioxx to come forward.

The last nail in the coffin was Merck’s announcement in September 2004, withdrawing Vioxx. This established credibility to the personal injury litigation which was well on its way. And viola, the Vioxx lawsuit was born. The first cases were filed in early 2005. Ernst’s case was the first to be settled. This is the tip of the iceberg. This could lead to wrongful death Vioxx lawsuits against Merck as a result of Ernst’s decision.

As of August 15, 2005, 4,951 was the exact number of filed Vioxx lawsuits, and tens of thousands more are expected. Seeing that the number of Vioxx lawsuits is increasing by the day, Merck may consider offering settlements to plaintiffs in some cases. Merck had previously planned to defend itself in every personal-injury Vioxx lawsuit. This would mark a first step by Merck in undoing the damage Vioxx has caused. Lawyers expect at least 25,000 suits to be filed eventually. About 20 million people used Vioxx between May 1999 and September 2004, when Merck stopped selling the drug after a clinical trial showed that Vioxx caused heart attacks and strokes in patients taking it for at least 18 months.

We can expect the Vioxx lawsuit to rule the medical and legal news for some time to come, and it has the potential to be the biggest personal injury lawsuit in history of mankind.

USN Diet Fuel Ultra-Lean represents the newest and most advanced meal replacement technology to reduce body fat, boost lean muscle mass and help improve general health.

Diet Fuel is a low GI, low-kJ meal replacement formula provides you with a complete, nutritious meal for anytime of the day. It contains all the essential nutrients in adequate quantities to ensure healthy, but also lasting weight-loss. The USN LeanSystem™ blend consists of N-Acetyl-L-Carnitine, HCA (Hydroxycitric acid) and a high level of bio-available Calcium, which have been shown to assist the weight-loss process through various effective mechanisms (excluding central nervous system stimulation).

The formula has a high fiber content to increase satiety levels. The reduction in hunger is further promoted through the addition of 25g High Biological Value Protein from various sources, which triggers a natural weight-loss hormone (PYY) in the body.

The high quality protein substrates also assist in improving protein synthesis, regulating blood sugar levels to reduce cravings and improving overall health.

If you’re reading this I am sure that you’ve also heard of the mysterious powers of the Acai Berry and it’s possible uses. I thought I’d dig up some information on it from various sources and see if I can find anything that confirms all the statements and claims.

From Wikipedia:

The açaí palm, or aqai, is a member of the genus Euterpe, which contains eight species of palm trees that are native to Central and South America, from Belize southward to Brazil and Peru. These palms grow mainly in swamps and floodplains.

The genus is named after the muse Euterpe of Greek mythology. Euterpe are tall, slender palms growing to 15–30 meters, with pinnate leaves up to 3 meters long. Many of the palms that were once in the genus Euterpe have been reclassified into the genus Prestoea (Riffle, 2003). The species Euterpe oleracea is usually called Açaí Palm, after the European adaptation of the Tupian word ïwasa’i, ‘[fruit that] cries or expels water’.

Açaí palms are fast-growing, and are cultivated for both their fruits and for their superior hearts of palm. Global demand for the fruit has expanded rapidly in recent years, and açaí is now cultivated for that purpose primarily. The closely-related species Euterpe edulis (jucara) is now predominantly used for hearts of palm.

Recently, the açaí “berry” has been touted and marketed as a highly beneficial dietary supplement. Companies sell açaí berry products in the form of tablets, juice, smoothies, instant drink powders, and whole fruit.

Marketers of these products make claims that açaí provides increased energy levels, improved sexual performance, improved digestion, detoxification, high fiber content, high antioxidant content, improved skin appearance, improved heart health, improved sleep, and reduction of cholesterol levels. More dubious claims include reversal of diabetes and other chronic illnesses, as well as expanding size of the penis and increasing men’s sexual virility and sexual attractiveness to women. Açaí is most commonly marketed as a weight loss product.

As of March 2009, there are no controlled studies backing up any of these claims. According to ABC News correspondent Susan Donaldson, these products have not been evaluated (in the United States) by the FDA, and their efficacy is questionable. In late 2008, lawyers for The Oprah Winfrey Show began investigating alleged statements from supplement manufacturers who suggested that frequent Oprah guest Dr. Mehmet Oz had recommended their product or açai in general for weight loss.

Visit Wikipedia for more information

NBC News also had this news snippet on the Acai Berry

Other than these 2 articles (video) I cant seem to find any more information about the Acai Berry, it’s rumoured benefits and or side effects. I have to be honest, I won’t trust anything that somone punts as a way to make very good money, especially when she goes on more about the money she makes than the benefits she gains from the product… Also be on the lookout for scammers that sell trial versions of the product, there have been numerous reports on people losing lots of money and receiving nothing in return.

Watch this space for more Acai Berry information…
