Seeing that OnlineAdvisor is a website where you can learn about various things and various places I have decided to start a section dedicated to hobbies and personal interests. In doing so I hope that I might be able to help someone find something they really enjoy and participate in.

First up is something that I’ve heard of, but can’t find a lot of information on: Gemmology also known as Gemology.

Wikipedia says: Gemology or gemmology is the science, art and profession of identifying and evaluating gemstones. It is considered a geoscience and a branch of mineralogy. Some jewelers are academically trained gemologists and are qualified to identify and evaluate gems.Recently, the demand for gemological services has grown, as increasing quantities of synthetic gems such as cubic zirconia and synthetic moissanite are manufactured. Gemologists perform such work as the identification of synthetic and natural gemstones, fracture-filled gemstones, and color-enhanced or treated natural gemstones

Gemologists study these factors while valuing or appraising cut and polished gemstones. Gemological microscopic study of the internal structure is used to determine whether a gem is synthetic or natural by revealing natural fluid inclusions, and included partially melted exogenous crystals to demonstrate evidence of heat treatment to enhance colour.

Well, most of it went over my head. Sounds fascinating though. If Gemmology seems like something you would like, view some of the books available that can assist you further:
